Install Toilet
Summary: Toilet seat installation, or tightening a loose toilet seat, is a fairly simple task as you’ll learn while reading this article. Before you install a toilet seat make sure that the replacement toilet seat is of the same size and shape as the one you are replacing. It’s not fun to replace a toilet seat only to find out the new seat doesn’t fit the toilet bowl.
Replacing a toilet seat - After triple checking to make sure that the new toilet seat you plan on installing is of the same size and shape as the old toilet seat you’re ready to begin. We start by removing the old seat. Wear gloves!
The hinges conceal two bolts that need to be removed before the seat can be lifted off the toilet. Rust is a common problem in this area, have some penetrating oil handy and let it soak in if the nuts don’t spin freely from the bolts. If you don’t have any penetrating oil it’s not a bad idea to pre-soak the area with a disinfectant cleaner to kill germs and loosen dirt.
In extreme cases the bolts simply will not come off and you will need to use a hacksaw to cut through the bolt just above the porcelain. If you need to use a hacksaw first mask off the area around the bolt head with tape and take your time so that you do not damage the porcelain. Be patient.
Install a toilet seat - With the old seat removed take a moment to clean the area of any debris before trying to install a new toilet seat. Your new toilet seat will come with some rubber washers to place against the porcelain so that the bolt does not damage your toilet. Lower the new seat into place and tighten the nuts firmly. Do not overtighten. Applying too much pressure may cause bolt damaged or your wrench may slip and hit the bowl causing injury to you or a broken tank or bowl.
That’s all there is to it! Test your new seat by sitting on it and wiggling around, it shouldn’t move back and forth at all. If it does you may need to tighten the bolts a little more. If you take your time from start to finish you’ll not only have a nice new seat you’ll also have cleaned the toilet in places you normally can’t reach while the seat is on. Good job!
