A heated toilet seat is a luxury not considered seriously until you have the unfortunate experience of needing to go to the bathroom in the middle of a cold winters night.

The sudden shock of coming into contact with a cold seat can sometimes be startling enough to temporarily block your ability to go at all. Likewise, if you need to remain seated for any length of time, your body heat can be drained through the seat itself leaving you with an unpleasant experience.

Low Voltage - Most major toilet seat manufacturers like Toto, Kohler, American Standard and Bemis offer a heated toilet seat powered by low voltage electricity. In fact some units require less than a quarter of the power used by a regular 60 watt lightbulb. They require an adapter to be plugged into a nearby outlet and nothing more. These units are generally left on at all times and cost as little as pennies a day to operate.

Installation - Homeowners concerned with energy conservation may want to use a timer so that the heated toilet seat is only warmed during times when it is likely to be used. It’s important to know that some units use so little electricity that in some cases a timer may actually increase energy use. Some timers use a very small amount of electricity themselves in order to keep accurate time, more than is saved by using the timer.

Custom Installation involves connecting the heated toilet seat to the bathroom light switch so that it only warms when the light is on. There are two ways to accomplish this, the easiest is to have the electrical outlet wired to turn off when the light switch is off. A low voltage electrical relay can also be installed by an licensed electrician (not a plumber).
