The elongated toilet seat was originally intended to be more hygienic, for men. The elongated portion of the toilet seat is narrower than the front of a standard toilet and allows a man to stand over the toilet more easily.
The theory behind the design is that the elongation will help catch dribble from someone standing over the toilet where a regular toilet seat would simply get wet. In reality if a man is going to get the seat wet the elongated toilet seat is of little help unless he is aware of the designs usefulness and is positioned accordingly.
U shaped toilet seats take the design idea one step further by completely removing the portion of the seat that usually catches any dribble. If the seat isn’t there to begin with it can hardly get wet now can it. Again, excellent in theory but it requires awareness. After reading this article… you know!
The elongated toilet seat does have its drawbacks which you should be aware of. The biggest drawback is that it takes more usable space in a bathrooms floor plan. Smaller bathrooms place a premium on floorspace and often opt for a smaller toilet. The other major drawback is that you cannot simply replace the seat when switching from a standard sized toilet, the entire toilet needs to be replaced which makes a change more costly.

We purchased three “two-speed” WaterRidge elongated toilets from Costco. We are delighted with the toilets, but the seats are TERRIBLY CHEAP!!! I have never had a quality issue with Costco before but by gosh the seats are just so and crummy, they slide around when you sit on them. So, we have to set about replacing/upgrading them all. I will bookmark this page and come back when I determine our budget. Great article and I’m glad I found you! (via Entrecard) — Bonnie
